What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
This one... is single speed Raleigh Rush Hour set up with a bob trailer 'n front rack. "Miss Eagle" does a lot, fast.

I can go most anywhere, most anytime.

Where do you ride?
See above.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
In Florida on the bridges to the beach the pelicans 'n other birds would just fly feet away next with me, that was neat. Riding to Snoqualmie 'n past North Bend and in the woods out there! I crashed two times 'cause I drank far too much. All of that combined. So far...

Bora

Bora on the Weller Street Bridge
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
2nd hand Kona Dew.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bike because parking is crazy expensive, and I'm too lazy to buy a gym membership!

Where do you ride?
From Rainier Valley to Pioneer Square & Georgetown. Basically to and from work & everywhere in between!

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that's happened to me was almost getting run off the road on Airport Way by a driver in a rental truck and redeeming myself when I passed them because they were stuck in traffic. I felt accomplished that day. I also discovered that my legs are super strong, riding up Beacon Hill is a piece of cake now!

To and from work (Capitol Hill to the International District and back), and lots of other places within the city.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?

Leslie

Leslie at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a diamondback 2014 hybrid.

Why do you ride?
I ride because it's fun, way faster than any other transport for where I need to go, and I get to see so many more people- happy people, too!

Where do you ride?
I ride to parks, school, grocery store, to friends' houses, and around Seattle.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Got a high five while riding in a no bike zone from the president of my college when I was an undergrad at Biola.

Kathleen

Kathleen at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a Specialized Globe Carmel 3.0 (21 speed and step through).

Why do you ride?
There is no bus service in the early morning where I live and I do not own a car.

Where do you ride?
42nd and North Huson Tacoma, WA  to 10th and Commerce Transit Center in downtown Tacoma to catch the 590 to Seattle. I put my bike in the Downtown On The Go Bike Cage. Sometimes I bike to the Sounder train station and continue biking from 4th and Jackson out along the waterfront, Myrtle Edwards Park to the Interbay area and work at GM Nameplate.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
It’s a flip between the people I meet and the animals I see.

Jen

Tom

Tom at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
1983 Nishiki International. Heavy steel, but it’s city proof and never quits.

Why do you ride?
Well, now it’s basically my job. But I started because it was more affordable than trying to keep my car running. After less than a year of biking for most my trips, my car was just collecting parking tickets so I sold it. Best decision I ever made. I haven’t missed it for a single second.

Where do you ride?
Everywhere. It gets me to the grocery store, it gets me all around town to cover bike news for Seattle Bike Blog, and it gets me out of town to go camping.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I fell in love! My fiancĂ©e Kelli bikes more than I do. I don’t know the exact moment when I knew I wanted to marry her but I’m pretty sure we were riding bikes together.

Jacques

Jacques at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I commute to work every day on an old Motiv HP Sonora that I found at the Goodwill for $20.00.  Its' not high end, its' heavy but very reliable and I don't get anxiety when someone scratches it, lol.

Why do you ride?
I made a choice 5 years ago in St. Louis to get more exercise and commute by bike to work every day that I could.  Before I was transferred out to Seattle I decided to sell my cars, never really drove them anyway, and continue to commute to work by bicycle.

Where do you ride?
I ride my bicycle from my home in Puyallup seven miles to the Sound Transit station and another mile and a half in Seattle to work and I repeat that process in the evening.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that has happened is I actually make time to stop, observe, breathe and really take in what is going on around me.  I read this quote on the internet, "My bike takes me places a car never could" and out of deference to this I try mix up my commute and keep it fresh by going to different areas/ways as much as possible.

Hafoc

Hafoc at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride Thyme. She is a Novara Randonee.

Why do you ride?
I returned to commuting by bicycle 6 Bike to Work Mays back (2009) when I had to admit I was 60 pounds too fat and growing larger. I have not only lost the weight but cycling has enriched my creativity and life.

Where do you ride?
Work; library; Farmer Markets; my P Patch plot; camping with my adult son; our favorite island to get lost in, Bainbridge; pick up groceries. The only time I don't cycle is due to injury or ice/ deep snow (gentle snow us lovely!).

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
While cycling home 2012 from my P Patch I had a pannier over flowing with leeks, kale, tomatoes and other veges. I stopped at the Dexter/Mercer light and I hear from behind me "Did you get that from a Farmer's Market?" I turned around and it was Mayor Michael McGinn! We chatted past a few lights about cycling and the P Patch program.

Ellie

Ellie at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a Huffy Durasport. The price was right (free) and it gets the job done.

Why do you ride?
This is actually my first week on a bike in more than 5 years! My workplace is doing a bike-to-work challenge that ends in mid-June. It was the kickstart I needed.

Where do you ride?
To/from work, mostly (home > Dearborn > Alaskan Way > Olympic Sculpture Park / Myrtle Edwards / Centennial Park > Interbay  > across the Ballard Locks > NW Market St > work!)

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Conquering my fears. The first day was terrifying, but now I’m really starting to enjoy it!

What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
My bike is a Cannondale, and she's lovely. CAAD7, R1000.

Why do you ride?
For exercise, to be outside and because I dislike walking. It hurts and takes too long.

Where do you ride?
Wherever I can. To work, around Lake Washington, to mother's day lunch, metric centuries and more, from Big Sur to San Simeon. Seattle to Portland.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I see more things. I experience more birds. I see deer. I smell flowers. And I feel stronger.

Alex

Alex at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street

Cathy

Cathy at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Ezee Sprint Electric Bike.

Why do you ride?
Riding a bike is often the easiest way to get from Point A to Point B. I like the speed of biking — or at least the speed I go — slow enough to see the world of life dancing around me, and slow enough to stop and talk to people.

Where do you ride?
Sadly I'm not riding very many places yet in Seattle. I'm a nervous rider. There are many places I like to ride in Portland, Vancouver BC, and of course cities all over Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands. But I'm completely confident Seattle will be a great city to bike in for "willing but wary" riders like me in the next five to 10 years.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I lost weight! I dropped 32 pounds in a year living car-free in Sweden.

Nathan

Nathan at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
2015 Kona Dew Plus.

Why do you ride?
I ride for three reasons. Entertainment, exercise, and reducing air pollution. Nothing is better than getting off work and being on my bike almost immediately. The stress of the day melts away with each pedal stroke. Currently I am training for STP for the first time this year.

Where do you ride?
I try to ride everywhere - work, the store, or going out with friends. My daily ride to work is from my house in Auburn to the train station and from King Street to Westlake.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
In general the best thing that's happened is the feeling of accomplishment after a long ride. I am able to say I went to this place or that place that is really far, all on my own power.

Mitch

Mitch at McGraw Square
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
A custom Freewheel delivery cargo tricycle.

Why do you ride?
To promote a friendlier city.

Where do you ride?
Wherever there are deliveries to be made.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
When I spontaneously shared the 2nd Avenue bike path with Mayor Ed Murray.

Marley

Marley at McGraw Square
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
This is a Trek 850. I found it on Craigslist for super cheap when I was looking for a non-road bike that I could ride on some dirt/gravel for a race. It's turned out to be the perfect commuting bike- an old steel frame with room for wide tires, a rack, room for fenders (even though I don't have them on right now), and it puts up with lots of abuse from me. I also have a Liv Avail road bike that I take on longer road rides.

Why do you ride?
So many reasons. Primarily for fun. Riding bikes is a social activity for me- I've made so many friends through bicycling it's crazy. It's also cheaper, greener, and healthier. Plus, it's just a much cooler way to experience your environment and be part of your community while on a bicycle.

Where do you ride?
Everywhere. I just got back from a bike camping trip to the Olympic National Forest. I would love to one day ride the Pacific Coast Highway. I don't think there's anywhere you can't go on a bicycle, it just might take you a little bit longer.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
This is so hard to answer. Over the last two years of riding after selling my car, I've lost 50 pounds and totally transformed my lifestyle. So in that sense, probably that lifestyle change. But daily, I love finding my friends throughout the city on rides and meeting up with them, and just going on random adventures!

Why do you ride?
My bicycle is my main mode of transportation.

Where do you ride?
I read everywhere in the city.

Tiva

Tiva at Sixth Avenue and Pike Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?

Darcy

Darcy at North 81st Street and Greenwood Avenue North
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Motobecane,  I don't know much about it.  I got it off craigslist.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bike for lots of different reasons.  I want to be healthy, and green.  I live and work in the same neighborhood so it makes the most sense to ride my bike.  I work in the non-profit sector, and enjoy what I do but it also means money is tight, so I don't own a car.

Where do you ride?
I mainly ride my bike in the Ballard/Greenwood/Phinney Ridge neighborhoods. My goal is to visit my friend on my bike this summer, and she lives in the Columbia City neighborhood.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that's ever happened to me on my bicycle, is the number of conversations it starts.  People think it looks neat, and will often come up and talk to me about my bike.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Passing my bus route, full of people and stuck in traffic. Ha!
