Seeing the sunrise in the morning on the road.

Jay

Jay in Westlake Park
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a Salsa modified with purple paint for extra attractiveness.

Why do you ride?
Why do I ride my bike? I like to ride, I like the exercise, I don't like to drive, it saves me money, it makes me environmental, I don't have to worry about traffic.

Where do you ride?
I ride for errands and recreation.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I once intentionally rode into a snow bank and went flying over the handlebars. It was fun so I did it again. I was around 20 years old then. I'm 60 now so I doubt I will do it a 3rd time.

What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Swobo.

Why do you ride?
Definitely for enjoyment.  I work as messenger, so it's also my $ maker.

Where do you ride?
All over Seattle daily.  When I'm not working, I like to slow down & take the scenic trails.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I can't think of a specific story.  I can say that there's nothing I enjoy more than being outdoors, riding around Seattle.  It never gets old!

What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a Diamondback Airen Three.

Why do you ride?
I ride because it's more fun than taking the bus.  I get to ride past the ocean and often see the sunrise or sunset.  It puts me in a good mood and makes me feel energized...plus I get some exercise!

Where do you ride?
I usually ride to and from work and occasionally ride just for fun.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Any experience that makes me smile.  I've had multiple experiences on a bike that have put a smile on my face - from the strangers on bikes who have helped me when I've had a problem to the bikers who just say good morning to the amazing views that I get to see from my bike seat.  Biking with friends is the best, though...just getting to share the experience with people you care about.

Sam

Sam at Fifth Avenue South and South Main Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a Cannondale.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bicycle because it's the cheapest, healthiest, pleasantest way to travel around the city. No traffic, no circling for parking, no costly maintenance, no pollution, etc. Beyond that, it's intensely meditative -- riding is perhaps the only time of my waking life where my head is clear. All I focus on is the road in front of me. I'm not stressed out about my busy schedule and responsibilities.

Where do you ride?
My bike is my primary mode of transport, so I ride it pretty much everywhere that I go, which is usually within Seattle, but this summer I have had the pleasure of biking to Port Angeles, Whidbey Island, Lopez Island, Kingston, and Bainbridge Island.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Everyone says that my legs look amazing! So I guess I have Seattle to thank for being so hilly!

I ride a DeSalvo made in Ashland, Oregon.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bike for exercise, commuting, and camaraderie.

Where do you ride?
Been fortunate to ride my bike in a lot of beautiful places but the city loops are most frequent these days - mostly West Seattle.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Friendship.  Amazing, how much connection you can gain from a little suffering together :-)

Bobbi

Bobbi at Fifth Avenue South and South King Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a Cannondale Synaps 6 - women's specific bicycle. To cycle to the grocery store and tool about when I have errands to run, I have a Cannondale Hybrid, but 98% of my riding is on my road bike.

Why do you ride?
Why do I ride - not sure that can be answered in one sentence, but I will try to keep it simple:
I ride for fun, fitness, to be outside, to see places that I could otherwise not get to or view from such a vantage point, it feels amazing as I set my own goals, reach them, perhaps walk away discouraged sometimes, but knowing that there is always another ride in my near future. I ride to keep my head clear of the little things that bog me down because on a bicycle it's just me, my bike and the road that matter. Sometimes the destination is important, mostly it's the getting there that I care most about.

Where do you ride?
I live in NJ, so most of my riding is done there. I often cycle in Pennsyvania and New York State. I come out to Seattle every summer for a few weeks to ride here as well. In New Jersey, my favorite place to ride is an area called The Sourlands, located mostly in Hopewell, NJ. It has the most hills locally that I can get to quickly to satisfy my urge to challenge myself. Bike traffic is minimal there as it attracts people who like to climb. I feel like I am part of a community when I am in those hills.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I doubt there is one best thing that I can think of that has happened to me while riding my bicycle - so here's a few: The friendships that I have formed over the years that have moved from simply getting together to cycle into doing things together other than just cycling. The general all around level of fitness that I have accomplished from riding so much (once the actual season starts, I am on my bicycle 5-6 times per week from anywhere between 17 and 60 miles per ride with a few 100 mile events fitted in). Okay - the best thing... happiness.

Nabil

Nabil at Mercer Street and Ninth Avenue North
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a Specialized Allez Sport.

Why do you ride?
I ride for exercise, transportation (I save $5/day when I ride), and the joy of it.

Where do you ride?
I ride from home (Green Lake) to work (downtown), to friend's houses, around town on weekends, and anywhere where parking may be tough.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that's happened while riding my bicycle is that I get exercise, save money, and feel great!

McKayla at Fifth Avenue South and South Weller Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Specialized Allez.

Why do you ride?
I love the whole experience of riding my bicycle. I love being able to stop when and wherever I want. I love the time it provides me to think and step back from the rest of my day. I always like to say that I think up my best ideas while riding my bike.  I just love being outside and soaking in all that Seattle has to offer. I also ride because it's incredibly convenient and inexpensive; I don't have a car, so it's the easiest way for me to get around.

Where do you ride?
Practically everywhere.  Work, meetings, dinner with friends, the grocery store, etc.  My daily commute takes me four miles along the Burke-Gilman trail from the University District to Magnuson Park.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I've made lifelong friends while riding my bike. Being able to share the joy of biking with friends is always a wonderful thing and so it making friends through experiencing the joy together. It sounds sappy, but it's true.

What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
1980s Centurion steel frame, restored by Bike Works in Columbia City!

Why do you ride?
Because it’s a fantastic, fun, low-carbon means of transportation! Bike commuting means I always get some exercise, even on rainy winter days.

Where do you ride?
To and from work year-round, and around the lake for fun in nice weather.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
When I was a kid, my brother and I would frequently bike to a neighboring town to buy baseball cards. That was a big adventure every time. I love biking along any of the waterways or waterfronts in Seattle, particularly around sunset.

Matthew

Matthew at Fifth Avenue and James Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Randonee (REO) – it was given to me by a co-worker b/c I rode a very old mountain bike.

Why do you ride?
I ride to work and home (I ride all the way home, but shorten it by hoping on a bus after biking 3 miles in the morning).  I ride b/c of the exercise and it simultaneously shortens my commute.

Where do you ride?
See #2.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I can’t think of any best thing, but I love the feeling of freedom as I ride – sometimes, perhaps unsafely, listening to music.  There have been a few funny stories where I have broken a pedal (it happened twice), once while riding the Chilly Hilly and once in Maine.  Not sure if I would say it is a best thing though – my family laughs about it.

What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Schwinn searcher.

Why do you ride?
Save money, exercise, reduce wear and tear on vehicle.

Where do you ride?
To work.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
At home, riding with my 11 year old daughter.

Stacie

Stacie at International District/Chinatown Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
1986 Puch (like "book" with a P)

Why do you ride?
Riding a bike reminds me to be a kid, empowers me as a woman and enables me to go with the flow ~in control of my own go. It just feels good.

Where do you ride?
Anywhere! Though I mostly stay within the N<->S corridor in Seattle for joy riding. Commuting from WS to downtown usually beats the bus.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
 ...every downhillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll...!

What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a LandRider self-shifting bike! It was a hand-me-down from my very generous mom.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bike to commute to work and back. I started about a year ago when our nanny totaled her car and she needed to drive our kids around in my car. I hated riding the bus – so my mom offered me her bike. When I started bicycle commuting I hadn't been on a bike in 16 years and I wasn't even sure if I would make it all the way home. Since then I've added a rack and bought myself some panniers. Now that I've made it a year I'm thinking about upgrading to something that's a little bit better fit for my body. Possibly even a cargo bike that I can take the kids to school on before heading to work.

Where do you ride?
I ride from Greenwood to the Roosevelt-Maple Leaf area. As I get stronger and more comfortable riding I find myself adding in errands further off my usual path.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Bicycle commuting makes me feel centered, accomplished, and self-sufficient. I have to say that's the best thing that's happened to me!

Scott

Scott at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
My current bike is a 2011 Novara Strada.  We were snowbirds at the time and I wanted a bike to ride for three months and then sell -- but with some minor re-sizing it turned out to be the most comfortable bike I've ever had. I will say that I imagined that an aluminum bike would be lighter.

Why do you ride?
Because it's exactly like being a kid again, but with much better equipment.

Where do you ride?
Now that we are both retired and no longer have a commute, we ride to neighboring cities for lunch instead.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I have experienced some very undeserved good luck on a number of occasions.
