Skye

Skye at South Jackson Street and Fifth Avenue South
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a pieced-together frankenbike, but the frame is a Univega Viva Sport so we'll go with that.

Why do you ride?
I bike because it's fun, free, and a great way to get exercise for people like myself who would never go to a gym. Biking is also faster than riding the bus most of the time.

Where do you ride?
All over the place! I live in Mt. Baker and run lots of errands in my neighborhood, downtown, and in the ID. I work down in Pike Place and practice with my chorus in Ballard, so you can usually catch me rolling between those neighborhoods as well. And of course, now that summer is here, I'll be biking to Lake Washington multiple times a week. :)

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing about riding a bike is the opportunity to see things in the city that people in cars and buses miss. It forces you to be present and mindful, something that every busy person needs more of.

Indu

Indu at Fifth Avenue South and South King Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
My bike is a super lightweight aluminum-framed Specialized hybrid commuter/road bike. Her name is "Krystal Light", named after the bike's original owner and an ode to the refreshing beverage my mom drank in the 80's. She is the nicest bike I've ever owned. In NYC, you can't have a nice bike because it WILL get stolen.

Why do you ride?
My boyfriend totaled my car. For the record, it wasn't his fault!

Where do you ride?
I live in Capitol Hill and mostly use my bike to commute to my workplace at Aubrey's Clock Gallery in Issaquah and to Danaca, the metalsmithing studio in the U-district where I like to make things. On my day off, I might take a ride to Denny Blaine or Alki Beach.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I love it when the wind whips past my face and turns my earrings into windchimes. I love the game of dodging cars and other obstacles. Bike riding forces you to be present in the moment.

David and Sandy

David and Sandy at Evanston Avenue North and North 34th Street
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
We are both riding Schwinns.

Why do you ride?
You can better control your schedule vs. public transportation.  The added bonus of exercising is also great. =)

Where do you ride?
We will be riding our bikes to work and to neighborhood events like the Fremont Sunday Market.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The ability to exercise vs. a car and being able to get to places that you couldn't get to by walking due to the distance.

10+ year old Specialized Hard Rock.

Ride for fitness/exercise.

Where do you ride?
Home to work, Ballard to the ID, and back most days.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
There isn't a "best thing" that stands out, it is nice every day, to be in touch with city, and the environment, and sometimes people I know say "hi".

Flora

Flora at Fifth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
My ride is a gray Cannondale Quick 4 that I bought in 2009.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bike instead of driving, which is why you saw me loaded up with groceries in my panniers. I have a sockeye salmon in my backpack!

Where do you ride?
I go everywhere you would within a 10-15 mile radius of downtown—to the Symphony, to Uwajimaya’s, the Ballard Farmer’s Market, the U district shopping mall, Georgetown, and much more.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I caught the thief who tried to steal this bike. I retrieved the bike, photographed and reported the thief, though the police did nothing. It was Hemp Fest 2011 and the cops had better things to do.  But I happily ride my bike every day.

This is a 1985 Trek 620.  Got it from BikeWorks in 2000.  It's nickname is Blue Jay.

Where do you ride?
Mostly to work and to the store.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I heard the voice of God, was given a life changing message.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I don't know what the best thing that ever happened to me riding a bike but the other day I just waved to people who were trying to hail cabs with their arms up. That was pretty great.

Jeff

Jeff at Third Avenue and Pine Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Specialized Tarmac.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bike for a few reasons, it keeps me healthy, it's fun, and I met lots of great people who share in what I do. The cycling community is awesome.

Where do you ride?
I ride my bike anywhere I can. I ride roads, gravel roads, and when I mountain bike I hit lots of crazy trails with lots of rocks.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that's happened is meeting all the cool people that share the fun and passion I have for cycling.

Where do you ride?
King County regularly.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
All about the scenery... some sunsets or stormy days just give my eyes a unique look of our planet while riding down or up a hill.

Madeleine

Madeleine at SODO Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a Giant OCR1 W.  W=women.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bike because it’s exercise and I have fun doing it.

Where do you ride?
I ride to work and sometimes on the weekend, I venture in to the Cascades and ride around mountains.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that happened to me while riding my bicycle was teaching myself to ride a bike when I was a kid.  It ranks right up there with natural childbirth for both of my kids and didn’t involve watermelon sized heads.

Emily

Emily at SODO Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I ride a vintage Trek 520 touring bicycle. It is rad.

Why do you ride?
I ride my bicycle to get places. Oh, and to look cool.

Where do you ride?
I mostly ride my bicycle between work and home. I also like to ride it to places where I can drink beer.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that's happened to me while riding my bicycle: unexpectedly running into friends. Not literally of course. This has happened a couple of times recently and I really appreciated it.

Arleen

Arleen at SODO Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I sport a Giant/Escape (I believe, I’ll confirm this afternoon) I believe it’s a cross Mountain / City bike.

Why do you ride?
I ride for therapy - I could easily take the bus or the train, or drive for that matter, but in riding I have to depend on myself for everything.  No hand-outs, no step ups, no quitting, no excuses! I should be able to do that in life too, right?! Not saying those things are bad or aren’t needed sometimes. But this adventure is on me, I can do it if I make the effort, regardless of the pace or weather if I choose.
I ride for health – pre diabetic with a genetic background promising diabetes, heart issues, and possibly cancer – not trying to do that!
I ride for fun – I used to do it as a kid, and look forward to taking my grandchildren out, hopefully they too will learn a little self-sufficiency, and appreciation of the outdoors and its temperaments.

Where do you ride?
Because Sue “Are You Kidding Me” Comis asked me to be on her Bike to Work Month Team!

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
New bike enthusiast friends! I confronted my fear of riding over bridges.  I loved the ride over I-90; I still have a fear of the bridge on Airport Way (it’s actually worse now, I stress when I walk across that bridge now), 4th Ave., and the 12th Ave Bridge to Beacon Hill.  I hope to conquer them eventually!

That's my Scott Sub 20.

Why do you ride?
I ride because my other car is a Toyota Tundra V8 that costs $50 (fully depreciated) to commute each day from Tacoma.

Where do you ride?
I ride from North Tacoma to the Tacoma Dome, then train, bus, and bike again from Eastgate to the office. Then I reverse it all in the afternoon.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that's happened on my bike is the ability to decompress before and after work.

What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
2003 Specialized Sirrus Sport with Tandem Tot carrier (http://tandemtot.com/) for my boy.

Why do you ride?
I much prefer biking, running or walking, combined with Light Rail and buses to driving a car around Seattle. It allows for authentic, face-to-face interactions with people and minimizes the harried mindset of big city life. It's healthy and fun, especially when with my boy.

Where do you ride?
Rainier Valley, Beacon Hill, Sodo, Downtown, Central Area, U District.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Chatting with my boy as we ride along and laughing together as we fly down long hills.
