Steve

Steve in front of Union Station on South Jackson Street

Lisa

Lisa at Fifth Avenue South and South King Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Fairdale Weekender from Dutch Bike Co.

Why do you ride?
I ride because it's usually the most convenient way to get somewhere. Faster than the bus and cheaper than a car. And way more stylish than either- I love turning heads with this bike.

Where do you ride?
Pretty much anywhere I need to go.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
A guy in a delivery truck pulled up next to me and said "Hey, I've seen you around. I like your style!"

Chris

Chris at Fifth Avenue South and South Jackson Street

Christopher

Christopher at Second Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
The vehicle you photographed me in was a velomobile by Ecobius.com.  It's basically just a fiberglass body shell on a TerraTrike Tour II recumbent bike and it has a roof I can take on and off.  I've also added a 36 V electric hub motor on the rear wheel to help me get up hills and accelerate quickly.

Why do you ride?
I ride because I want to reduce my impact on the environment.  When I lived in Denver I was on the road over an hour one-way to work and I just felt that I was wasting resources.  Now that I live here, I can exercise and have a much more minimal impact on the environment by commuting by bike to work.

Where do you ride?
I ride from Winslow on Bainbridge Island to the International District where I work.  The ferry treats me as a bike, so I just have to pay the pedestrian fee going from Seattle to the island (it's free coming from the island to Seattle), so my expenses stay low.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I definitely get noticed a lot.  One of my concerns when I was contemplating getting this velomobile was being visible since it's so low to the ground.  My fears have been unfounded, though, as I'm actually stopping traffic in intersections because it's such an head-turner.  I'm very recognized on the island, and I constantly get stopped with questions.

Stephen

Stephen in Union Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
My bike is a titanium DeSalvo cyclocross bike, converted to be more of an urban commuter.

Why do you ride?
I ride for transportation, fitness, and freedom.

Where do you ride?
I mainly ride from central Seattle to the Rainier Valley, but I enjoy finding dirt or gravel when I can.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing I've seen on a bike is Glacier National Park.

Deepika

Deepika at Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Schwinn GTX-2 Hybrid bike.

Why do you ride?
Most fun way of getting an exercise for me.

Where do you ride?
Mostly from home to work and back, which means I go all the way from Eastlake to near Safeco Field. I also try to go for leisurely rides around the lake and the arboretum.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
As I was riding on Lakeview Blvd yesterday, I suddenly turned around to this the magnificent view of the Lake Union, sparkling in the sun. I always knew Seattle was beautiful, but that was the moment I felt it. :)

Ed

Ed in Union Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Specialized Tarmac road bike, Redline Merto Sport commuter, Guerciotti road bike, Cervelo track bike, 1970's Schwinn Suburban, 1984 Cecil Behringer road bike.

Why do you ride?
I ride because I love it.  It makes me feel like a kid.  It make me happy.  I ride to honor my parents, avid cyclist in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's.  My dad rode his bike to work everyday, Raleigh 3 speed with a Brooks saddle.  I ride to explore, to take care of my body.  I ride for social justice.  I ride as an example of what is possible.  I ride for other African Americans like me, for youth and adults.  I ride because I can.

Where do you ride?
I ride in West Seattle, to work at Cascade Bicycle Club, Lake Washington, Tacoma, Burien, Seatac, White Center, all over Seattle.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that happens while riding is seeing people that I know.  Being able to stop and say hi, to wave, that doesn't happen in a car.  When I ride my bike I feel more connected to the community.

What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Trek Road Bike.

Why do you ride?
Let me count the ways: bottom-line, I am a much happier, and healthy human. My wife agrees.

Where do you ride?
Interurban North from near Shoreline to Sound Transit (11 miles one way).

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The joy of a sunny, warm spring day after a winter of rainy/cold commuting is something to savor.

Rijder

What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
Islabikes CNOC model. It's got cro-moly forks, a micro reach aluminium brake lever, cro-moly handlebars, Kenda tyres, a sealed bearing headset and bottom bracket and a fully enclosed free floating chainguard.

Why do you ride?
Because it's fun and I don't pollute.

Where do you ride?
The Burke Gilman Trail, the Lake Washington loop, all over.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Riding with my mom.

Josh

Josh in Union Station
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
I have Surly and Soma cyclocross bikes set up as all-rounders, an old Mongoose BMX cruiser and an Ibis Mojo mountain bike. I also have an undisclosed number of project bikes. I definitely subscribe to the N+1 theory of bicycle ownership where N is the current number of bicycles that you own and N+1 is the optimal number of bikes to own.

Why do you ride?
I ride for fun, transportation, sanity, exercise, socializing and lots of other reasons.

Where do you ride?
Most of my trips around town are made by bike whether they are for work, grocery shopping or visiting friends. Most of my trips around town are made by bike whether they are for work, grocery shopping or visiting friends. Mountain biking is one of my main sports and I really enjoy adventuring and traveling by bike.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The cumulative experience of interacting with the world by bicycle is the (ongoing) best thing that happens to me when i ride bikes.

Ben

Ben in front of Union Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
This is my Shop Cruiser. It does everything I need from it. Namely, get lunch, ride around and say "hi" to neighbors in Pioneer Square, get beer, and look good.

Why do you ride?
I ride because besides eating well, it's the best thing I can do for myself, by myself.

Where do you ride?
I ride everywhere. I ride for adventure. I ride for fun. I ride around to run errands. I ride to get away. I also ride so that I can eat pretty much whatever I want, whenever I want.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Met my lovely girlfriend.

Sarah

Sarah at N 92nd Street and Corliss Avenue North
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
Not sure . . . It's a Trek 820. I bought it used; pretty sure it was originally designed in the 90s as a mountain bike for adolescent boys. But it's a great bike and much less bulky than contemporary mountain bikes. $200 well spent!

Why do you ride?
I occasionally ride just for fun with my bike-fanatic boyfriend. But mostly I ride to get around when walking and busing aren't efficient enough.

Where do you ride?
Burke Gilman Trail, ride to class at NSCC, occasionally ride to work at Harborview Medical Center.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that has happened while riding is really the absence of an event: I have not been hit by a car. [KNOCK ON WOOD]

Kim

Kim at North 81st and Greenwood Avenue North
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
My bike is a Team Novarra bike done up proper by Bike Works in Columbia City. How could one not resist that pink to purple fade? Pretty sick.

Why do you ride?
I bike to smell the flowers, feel the breeze, see the sights and to get to places.

Where do you ride?
I ride mostly here in North Seattle. I'm hoping to get some longer rides in by the end of summer.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Best thing I've seen so far was a shooting star.

Tarrell

Tarrell inside Union Station
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
A Kona road bike and a Raleigh commuter named Happy (pictured).

Why do you ride?
It frees my mind. It calms my soul.

Where do you ride?
I ride everywhere I can as long as my back will allow.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that's happened while riding was the view from behind my son when we're both riding down the trail. It doesn't happen much, but when it does: bliss.

Ref

Ref inside Union Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
Kona Dew Plus.

Why do you ride?
To walk the talk, to make sure the trip is as enjoyable as the destination, to be amazed at myself for actually riding up Stone Way N every day!

Where do you ride?
Mostly to work (Pioneer Square) and in the neighborhood.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
To feel like I am part of a transformative cultural change in quality of life, good-by Detroit and the car, hello to Kona and bike.

Hudson

Hudson at Fifth Avenue South and South Jackson

David

David inside Union Station
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
My normal ride is a Rawland rSogn, but it had a flat tire the day you caught me, so I was riding my Trek 520 as a back-up bicycle. I also have a Strida 3.2 (I'll wait while you look it up. Still waiting while you chuckle a little to yourself), and a Surly Steamroller that I keep in my friend's basement in portland so I can ride it when I'm down there visiting friends and family.

Why do you ride?
I ride because it's the quickest, cheapest, and most hassle-free option for most trips. I like feeling the breeze in my hair, being an arm-length from fellow humans instead of a car- or lane-length, and pulling impromptu u-turns to stop and talk with people I know along the way.

Where do you ride?
Purdy much everywhere.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
When I was a little kid, my friend and I used to take breaks from drawing video games by bombing down our neighborhood hill. We were pretty sure the wind whipping against us helped clear our minds of old ideas and free up space for new ones. Those were pretty good times.

Desmond

Desmond, in front of Union Station
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
SOMA Double Cross Disc frame with steel frame/fork. It's set up as a flat-bar road bike with Avid BB-7 disc brakes, Back Alley Bike Repair hand-built wheels, fenders, lots of lights and stainless steel chain-rings.

Why do you ride?
Because I'm a beast and I love to eat up them Seattle hills.

Where do you ride?
From here to there, and sometimes back.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I just got an air horn too. Look out world.

Michael

Michael, on the lid of the International District/Chinatown Station

What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
I ride a 21 speed Schwinn Trailway Hybrid which I LOVE. Previously I have had 2 huffies, a Fuji and a Cannondale. I really like my touring bike; it fits the way I ride now and am planning on buying a mountain bike for use this summer on day trips to, well, the mountains. I'll still take the hybrid for the islands and Skagit.

Why do you ride?
I ride to commute to work and for pleasure. Definitely take advantage of the bike racks on the buses to ride all over.

Where do you ride?
Through the city as needed, but prefer to use the bike routes for pleasure, Discovery Park, Alki, etc..... (checking off parks on my list.....I intend to bike to all of them) Furthest ride in a day was 42 miles (I have endomondo, so I start it as I leave the house and end it upon return, so it wasn't 42 straight, it was over 14 hrs!). Furthest I have commuted with it is Pioneer Square to Redmond around the lake, and Pioneer Square to Tacoma once, never again.

Even with just a bit of time I am usually riding along a waterfront for fun and relaxation. According to my odometer I put just over 3700 miles total on my bike last year (purchased in Feb). Not much so far this year as I haven't been commuting as much.

As I said, I am a tourer, not a speed demon or an exerciser.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I like to be able to stop and take pics all over and send them to my friends back east. I really like the camaraderie of bicyclists here, like whenever you stop and walk the bike for a while them always asking if you're okay or need help. Try that in a car that breaks down--see who stops. And, on the one occasion I did break down (flat tire) three or four people stopped to offer to help me fix it! Bikers are cool.

I also like the compliments I get on my inexpensive bike, as I have phone holder for GPS use, mini speakers, cup holder, and a trunk, so people comment on how cool it is and how pretty it is. Not bad for a cheap bike! (her name is Buela, by the way).

What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
A Motive tandem, a Kona MinUte cargo bike, a Canondale road bike and a Viva Kilo city bike.

It's fun, it's good exercise and I meet friends along the way.

Where do you ride?
To work and around NW Seattle for errands, kid activities and more.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I love discovering new things about my neighborhood - hidden gardens, birds at the Ballard Locks and more. But Spencer and I agree that the best thing about riding a bike is meeting new friends!

Carla

Carla at Sky Nursery
What brand and type of bicycle do you have?
I have only one trusty steed and it''s a Surly Long Haul Trucker, vintage 2007.

Why do you ride?
I ride to get where I need to go.

Where do you ride?
Work, play, errands, seeing the city, learning about local trails.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Best thing that happened- cycling solo around SF led to meeting my husband. A few years later we cycled down the California coast for five days to attend a family wedding in Santa Barbara. Trip of a lifetime!

To patrol downtown and help people.

Where do you ride?
Downtown Seattle.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I love meeting people new to Seattle.

Robin

Robin in an alley in front of an Alfa Romeo shop
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
I have 3 bikes as well as a project bike:

1. My pride and joy is the "Queen Bee" (pictured). It's custom built by local builder Michael O'brien of O'brien Cycles. It's a city commuter with a generator hub, disc brakes, internal gears (8 speeds with two chainrings for double the fun), fenders and two sturdy racks.

2. My trusty 1996 Gary Fisher hybrid bike is outfitted with fenders, rack and folding metal basket for grocery shopping and other useful chores. This is my traveler- easy to throw on the hook on the Amtrak or Sounder train. Equally at home on muddy park trails or urban streets.

3. Vintage 60's Italian Pagnini Road Bike purchased on my honeymoon in Italy. It used to have a Campagnolo components but I have modified it with STI shifters and gears that climb hills. Fast and fun!

4. My project bike is an old red Nishiki mixte frame. I will be adding more gears, old fashioned rack, and folding basket for hauling practicality. I plan to coordinate bamboo fenders and bar grips with silver reflective streamers AND match the cable housing to the silver decal paint. Kind of geeky but cute.

5. My next bike is going to be a folder- still undecided whether it will be a Brompton or a Bike Friday.

Why do you ride?
I ride because it's fun, freeing and gets me there reliably. I can also eat dessert!

Where do you ride?
I ride everywhere- mostly streets but more and more I search out pleasant spaces to include on my routes like parks and trails. I've been using alleyways lately so I don't have to waste time stopping at lights (I do stop at every one otherwise).

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
The best thing that happens when I'm riding is being able to smell the morning air, or spring, or rain, flowers, new bark, night air.....
Also love chatting with folks along the way.

Thomas

Thomas on some road, somewhere
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
I have a lot of bikes. i will list them in their order of importance to me: Bombus Touring Bike, Bombus Singlespeed, Cove Mountain Bike, Generic Beach Cruiser named "Bertha", Homemade chopper, Homemade tall bike, Homemade swing bike, Nishiki 80's road bike, other frames not deserving much mention.

Why do you ride?
The joy of riding a bike is first. It is also nice to get places, and a wonderful way to see everything on your way.

Where do you ride?
I mostly ride in Seattle. Once a year i get to tour the Puget Sound with MOBRoll. if I am lucky I get another few long rides in with friends.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
Seeing great things from my bicycle seat with my friends is the best thing that happens to me on a bicycle.

E

E in Pioneer Square
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
My bike is named Starship. She's a Surly Long Haul Trucker with a Disc Trucker fork and some other modifications. We've been through a lot together.

Why do you ride?
More reasons than I could even say! It's the easiest way to get around, definitely the most affordable, and often the fastest; it keeps me healthy, it lets me see the world around me, it reduces my participation in the apocalyptic decimation of the planetary biosphere. It promotes the most efficient, safe, socially-just, and generally human-friendly possible configuration of all built environments. Every change I want to see in the world is advanced by bicycles.

Where do you ride?
All over town, usually. Once I rode from here to Panama, though.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
That's a tough call. I've encountered messianic figures on mountain tops. Learned to sing. Made brilliant acquaintances. Revisited crumbled civilizations. Had epiphanies about the nature of life, the universe, and everything. But in the end, really, what could be better than the riding as an end unto itself?

David

David outside Union Station
What brand and type of bicycles do you have?
I have a DeSalvo road bike, built by Mike DeSalvo in Oregon, a Co-Motion that's convertible from a fixed gear to a geared bike (currently configured as a one-by-nine), a Gunnar track bike (my regular ride), and a Ted Wojcik mountain bike. I guess I have a thing for hand-made steel bikes.

Why do you ride?
I ride to get where I'm going in a manner that doesn't impose unnecessary burdens on infrastructure, or unnecessarily consume scarce resources. In short, I ride because I care.

Where do you ride?
Everywhere.

What's the best thing that happened to you while riding?
I've seen too many amazing things to count: acts of heroism, camaraderie, and selflessness abound. By being out there, and exposed, on our bikes we are more connected to each other and more humane in our interactions - and those "best things" happen every day on a bicycle.
